WET COATING

In addition to high-quality powder coating, WIEGEL also offers professional wet coating for demanding metal surfaces – precise, flexible, and optimally tailored to individual customer requirements.

What is wet coating?

In wet coating, special coating materials in liquid form are applied to the surface to be protected. Once dried, they form a solid, protective layer. This film formation creates a long-lasting and reliable surface protection.

Application methods

The coating material is mainly applied manually using a spray gun, supported by application pumps (Airless, Airmix, or electrostatic). This method enables particularly precise and even coating – even for complex part geometries.

Process

Pre-treatment

For a high-quality and durable surface, careful pretreatment is essential in both powder and wet coating processes. Depending on the condition of the substrate, this is done either mechanically, such as by sandblasting, or using wet-chemical methods. Only a clean, grease-free surface ensures optimal adhesion and protective performance of the coating.

(Powder) coating

During the coating phase, the material is covered with a powder layer to provide effective protection against corrosion and wear. Depending on the location, application is done either manually by hand or automatically by machines – always aiming for a uniform layer thickness. The powder is applied electrostatically, allowing it to adhere reliably even to hard-to-reach areas.

(Wet) coating

In a specially equipped manual spray booth, the wet paint is applied manually using a spray gun. Thanks to the flexible positioning of the workpiece – for example on a turntable or crane – all areas can be coated precisely and evenly. This ensures a high-quality appearance and optimal surface protection, even for single items or small production runs.

Curing / Drying

After coating, the surface must cure to form a durable protective layer. In powder coating, this is achieved by curing in an oven, where the powder melts and distributes evenly. In wet coating, the paint is hardened by air or oven drying.

Overview of Paint Types

Epoxy resin coatings

Epoxy resin coatings offer excellent chemical resistance and adhesion, making them ideal for indoor areas and as a primer, but they are not UV-resistant.

Polyurethane coatings

Polyurethane coatings are characterized by excellent weather and UV resistance as well as good mechanical properties. They are commonly used in high-quality outdoor projects and serve as a topcoat system.

Water-based coatings

Water-based coatings (hydro paints) feature an environmentally friendly profile, low solvent content, and a favorable VOC balance – all without compromising quality.

Duplex System: Hot-Dip Galvanizing and Coating

For maximum corrosion protection, we offer a combination of hot-dip galvanizing and coating (duplex system).
The galvanizing process is already optimized with the subsequent coating in mind. After galvanizing, the parts are stored in a protected environment and then professionally coated. The result: a service life that exceeds the sum of the two individual systems (in accordance with DIN 55634 – A.6 and A.7).

Sustainability and Environmental Protection

By using modern water-based paints and efficient application methods, solvents and emissions are significantly reduced. This way, WIEGEL actively contributes to sustainable surface protection even in the field of wet coating.
