Corrosion protection for the world’s largest offshore wind farm

At the hot-dip galvanizer WIEGEL, Maximilian Arnold is responsible for the serial customers division – and thus also for projects such as Dogger Bank, the largest offshore wind farm in the world, located in the North Sea.

Offshore installations are exposed to extreme conditions. The salty air of the North Sea belongs to the highest corrosivity category, CX. That’s why the steel components were additionally coated after hot-dip galvanizing – a so-called duplex process for maximum durability.

Over 1,500 tonnes of steel galvanized and coated

On behalf of the manufacturer Smulders, WIEGEL galvanized over 1,500 tonnes of steel for the monopile foundations of the Dogger Bank. WIEGEL was involved as early as the planning phase and, through drawing reviews and technical consultation, was able to define optimal openings for zinc flow.

This is how WIEGEL helps ensure the long-term and reliable operation of the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm – contributing to the sustainable energy supply of millions of households.
